Sea-Motion

A drawing action by Arlo, with his mom, Lori.
Drawing ephemera from the performance.

Preparing the ship for voyage.

This large-scale marker drawing is being prepared for collective transformation through sea storms, shallow waters, racing currents, and perhaps collisions with icebergs. We are all too aware of the tropical storms that have been traveling through this part of the country, lately, so we listened to the sounds of sea storms to get in the zone.

A ship drawing, prepared for departure. How will this idea be transformed?

The speculative voyage

A series of mixed media boats touch on sublime experience, conjuring Turneresque passages through the watery milieu. Reportedly, Turner was hurt by the criticism of his painting Snow storm repeating “soapsuds and whitewash” over and over again, and saying, “What would they have? I wonder what they think the sea’s like? I wish they’d been in it”.

Title: Ships on the edge of sea storms. Materials: Acrylic, oil pastel and collage on Yupo paper, 2021

This purple larker drawing is the first created to voyage the waterways throughout the city of Columbus. Arlo’s favorite museums, libraries, and maybe even his own school are of all ports considered for entry. He is curious to learn how his idea will be transformed by others in his community – especially in spaces out of reach since the pandemic.
